| I was prescribed lithium in august of 2002 after a suicide attempt on a cruise ship. it should have been a really happy time for all of us, only to find that i had severe mood swings on board the ship. i was happy that afternoon and at night, severely depressed. that was when i took all my meds. i was let off in spain and was at a local hospital in barcelona there. i was treated for a day, and was sent back to our hotel. after i got back home, my doctor diagnosed me as either bipolar or schizoaffective. he put me on lithium and loxapine. that was a really good combination as i felt better over the weeks. 2 years later, i was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. during those two years, i experimented with a lot of neuroleptics or antipsychotics. i finally found the right one with loxapine. it's been very difficult times for myself and my family, but we managed. so can you all. | I hated Lithium. I gained 30 pounds on Lithium in 1 month. I will never go on it again. To get to the weight I was would only make me suicidal again. |

| Hi there Lady Rider - there are quite a few mood stabilizers besides Lithium. Please talk to your psychiatrist about this. I know how difficult it is to keep the weight down. But healthy eating, exercising, good night's rest, and lots of water, have kept me ok on the weight issue. I know, I sometimes feel so depressed when I gain weight. All the weight goes to my waist and so many people have asked me if I were pregnant. I want to tell them to f*** off, but you can't do that. I want to though and they all know I have a weight issue. But you must take a mood stabilizer though. Don't hesitate to try different ones though. Take care of yourself, Cindy |
