Dear Members, If you have been treated with olanzapine (Zyprexa, Zydis) for your Schizophrenia, on the basis of your experience:
- Would you recommend olanzapine to other members for the treatment of their Schizophrenia?
- What were the adverse effects caused by olanzapine? How severe were these side-effects?
- How much did one month's supply of olanzapine cost?
Before you write your review, please use the Yes-No-Unsure buttons on the bottom of this post to indicate if you would recommend olanzapine to other members. Phil Long M.D. Administrator |

My wife has been on Zyprexa for several years after trying a couple other meds that she couldn't handle the side effects. She sleeps 10 hours a day and has but on quite a bit of weight but the side effects are minor compared to what she was like before going on Zyprexa. We have insurance, so we only have to pay $20 for 30 tablets, a months supply. |

My 32 year old son was on Zyprexa for schizophrenia for seven years. He was a walking zombie. His reply to questions were a yes or no. He always stayed in the background like a scared puppy. He was unable to communicate much with family and lost all his friends. He also didn't show any affection with me or those who tried to touch him or hug him. It was heartbreaking to watch this good looking guy who was so intelligent he received a scholarship to the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He was having symptoms and dropped out. We have finally found a new psychiatrist, who at least is able to wean him off the Zyprexa. Believe me, it's been a awful battle of wills, to try to make him understand that people are trying to help him. This doctor has tried several different medications, but each one would set him back again. I suggest either to find a new doctor or get one that at least tries to find a medicine outside of Zyprexa that causes severe problems when taken for years.
I can't remember what the cost is because he is on SSI and they pay for his meds. josiecatherine

I have been on Zydis for 3 weeks now. So far it makes me sleep much more. It slows down the storm in my head. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped with much more than that yet. I thought it should have helped more by now. I still don't want to be around anyone, even the two family members that I was close to. |

I would not recommend it. It was too sedating for me. I just had to pay my insurance copay. I have been on abilify for a year and doing much better. The abilify enables me to focus and concentrate where no other medication has. Dennis |

I would recommend Zyprexa for treatment of the symptoms, but there are a lot of side effects for me. I need to sleep 12 hours per day at least, and struggle to keep up with my friends who go out often and all work full-time. I have put on weight too, despite watching what I eat.
That said, it has got rid of the paranoia mostly and I have been able to work part-time since. I just hope that one day they invent a medication that has the same benefits, but without the tiredness.
I do not pay for Zyprexa as I live in the UK.

no, explicitly no, I would not recommend Zyprexa in any form. I have been taking it since it's appproval in the U.S back in '96. It has stopped the voices and most of the paranoia/delusions. However, I eat too much, I need to much sleep to survive, I'm an emotionless shell of the person I used to be. Oh yeah, there's no hope of getting off of it at this point. The last time I went off of it it was less than two days before I was feeling withdrawal effects of super stress, paranoia, and lack of appetite. The cost of this medicine was ridiculous at first, when I made 10 dollars an hour and had no insurance, I just wen without for about thirty days before my employer wrote a letter to our friends at eli lilly. I gained thirty pounds within six weeks of the beginning of the medicine and have struggled with my weight ever since. Eli Lilly is the effing Devil |

Definitely YES!!!
By all means!!
Zyprexa may quite as well stop any major breakdown on its heels!
Surprisingly, in two days of this med., my psychotic and paranoid symptoms were stopped in their tracks! I guess it worked for me specifically. ; )
Even a moderate dosage, 10mgs., was enough for me.......
After a while, zyprexa tends to give depression, but what is better - melancholy or a full crisis of paranoia?
The zyp did arrest my train of thought, and left me isolated and depressed - but what is the pay-off?
The price of torment and chaos and disarray is a mild introverted 'high,' and numbness and absense of feeling, but it was better than the alternative.
Sometimes one has to be pragmatic. |
