Dear Members, If you have been treated with ziprasidone (Geodon) for your Schizophrenia, on the basis of your experience:
- Would you recommend ziprasidone to other members for the treatment of their Schizophrenia?
- What were the adverse effects caused by ziprasidone? How severe were these side-effects?
- How much did one month's supply of ziprasidone cost?
Before you write your review, please use the Yes-No-Unsure buttons on the bottom of this post to indicate if you would recommend ziprasidone to other members. Phil Long M.D. Administrator |

the only reason why i said no was because it made me VERY tired during the day to where i could do nothing but sleep.
it was about 50 dollars a month for the Geodon. |

No. Once I got up to 100mg bad side effects would kick in even if i was only 30 minutes or so late taking the pill. I now have horrible withdrawal even 2 months after i stopped taking geodon. Horrible anxiety, shakes, restlessness, it feels like i'm crawling out of my skin. |

geodon was by far the worst med i was ever put on. it made me a zombie, it made me throw up 3-5 times a day on average, i was absoultly miserable, i was shaky and sick for months, at school my teachers always thought i was a junkie and would ask me if i needed help with substance abuse problems. |

I voted unsure,
I have been on this drug for four months. I have lost 30 of the pounds that I put on with olanzapine and I have continued to remain healthy. But I threw up once in the office on the floor by the kitchen and they put signs up saying warning puke on the floor - and left them there until the cleaners came. I also, as posted in the geodon withdrawal thread, had trouble when I reduced my dosage too quickly. It happened maybe 10 weeks ago and I still have trouble sleeping some nights now. I am on 60mgs at night. I also developed a tremor in my right hand that would come and go - and luckily it dissapeared when we took away my morning dose. |

I took this medication for the first time last night and I will never take it again. I have had to call out of work due to the side effects I had with it. I couldn't wake up, could barely move my arms or even speak. I will just stick with my Seroquel! |

I was placed on ziprasidone (called Zeldox here in Canada) earlier this year. I found it to be one of the most ineffective medications that I have tried so far. It did not help with either the positive or negative symptoms at all. I still heard voices all the time, and became more paranoid than ever. I eventually had to go back to taking haloperidol and flupenthixol in order to control the symptoms. One thing that I found about ziprasidone was that it was extremely sedating. Even 20mg of this drug was able to make me extremly drowsy. As a matter of fact, I found that 20mg of ziprasidone was 10 times more sedating than 100mg of chlorpromazine, or even 75mg of methtrimeprazine! As for cost, a months supply of ziprasidone cost me about $500 Canadian.

I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work for you. I'm just switching over to it right now and I've heard all sorts of things about it from all different people. I'm just curious but why did you have to pay for it? It's covered by healthcare in Canada, at least mine is.
I hope you're feeling better now OWLman.

I vote yes. I find this drug really helps my symptoms, and I've found the side effects to be mild. I know many people have had negative experiences with it, but Zeldox definitely works with my body chemistry.
Things to be cautious of, though - The withdrawal for this drug is BRUTAL. Even if I only miss one dose, I get panic attacks, fits of rage or crying, and bad hallucinations.
So provided you are better than me at remembering to take it twice a day, it's a drug I would recommend.
In Canada, my dose (80mg twice a day) is a few hundred dollars per month, but there are many options for medication coverage, so I am lucky enough not to have to pay for it.

I find Geodon to be a very unpredictable drug. You never know how your going to feel when you take it. Personally I have to live my life around the pills. If I'm having a bad Geodon day and it's a work day, I find I just have to suffer through it. Sleep for me on this drug is interrupted. I get up every one to two hours every night but I have no problem falling back to sleep. I don't know if this may be caused by the intense dreams I have on it. Waking up in the morning is like waking up from surgery (anesthesia). I find I have to drink a cup of coffee and then exercise to get the blood moving. I find that I need at least 11-12 hours sleep on this med. I find that I feel sometimes I am in my own world after taking a dose. I find that I feel totally comfortable sitting in the house instead of going out to do things. Going to the store seems like a chore. I'm on a small dose of 40mg a day in which I take in the evening (makes me too tired if I take in the day). Just wanted to add my 2 cents to this thread. |

I have tried a few different anti-psychotics and find genric Geodon to be far and away the best from here http://www.internationaldrugmart.com/geodon.html. Risperdal worked as an anti-psychotic, but it made the depression worse and made me gain 25-30 lb's. So far, I have had no side effects with Geodon. I think I have found a winner. |

Hi owlman,
I have decreased my dosage now to 20 mg a day and I know what your saying. Even at 20 mg this drug is sedating.
