Dear Members,
Research has shown that fear of abandonment is often a problem in both schizophrenia and depression.
Fear of Abandonment is defined as:
Fears being alone or being temporarily separated from a loved one. Could you please tell our community if fear of abandonment was part of your schizophrenia, and what made this better or worse.
Your comments will greatly help others facing these same problems.

I like being alone in my room but not in the house. I always didn't have that many friends. I have lived with my parents sinceI was 49. That was when I was committed to a mental hospital. I'm afraid everyone will leave me now. Or that they will committ me again. |

I'm surprised to read that schizophrenics are afraid of abandonment. I thought my borderline personality disordered girl friend's defining characteristic was fear of abandonment.
Now, she tells me she was never mentally ill, but just wanted to be close to me, and that's why she went to psychiatrists for the last 16 years. She says she went to psychiatrists only because she didn't want me to abandon her. Not that I finally have abandonned her, she no longer takes psych meds or sees psych doctors, she says.

My experience: Initially I thought I would be abandoned in the hospital, my fear was that great that my husband did the 200km round trip with the children each day to visit me....for 5 weeks..I still get anxious when left alone and am glad my daughter and husband pop in and out of the home office all day and that we have animals.I try to structure my time and be task orientated. |

I am not sure if I have any fear of abandonment issues. I don't think I suffer like some of the other people have posted. But after watching good will hunting with matt damon - I thought I did. They said he had fear of abandonment issues and picked very loyal friends in low places because of it. I used to have friends like that in high school. Loyal to the hilt but not that talented academically. I had some academically gifted friends and they were normal just your regulation loyalty. My sister was taken away from the house when I was young and that made me believe that I misbehaved I would be sent from the house as well. That effected my personality somewhat - and may have caused some fear of abandonment issues. I did not have fear of abandonment as part of my psychosis though. And if I have fear of abandonment it has been a life long thing.

I always had the thought in my mind that the people that I cared about would just leave me in the end, and I think that made me sometimes hostile to them. But now that I'm older I'm not afraid anymore, and I feel fine being alone with myself. |
