does any one know which is harder to quit and if the methods for quitting can be applied across the board including for weight lost. is quitting all these things just as hard? also, is 10 years of drinking too much just as harmful as smoking for 10 years? any expertise or ideas about this topic would be very interesting to me.
thanks

When I did psychology at university I got the following mortally statistics (per annum for the early noughties in the UK)
Tobacco:- 120,000 deaths per year Alcohol 30,000 deaths per year
(Home Office statistics)
Tobacco also tends be considerably more addictive than alcohol for most people.
This would tend to suggest that tobacco is considerably more dangerous than alcohol, although alchohol is still quite dangerous Ho wever tobacco does not have the problems associated with violent behaviour that alchohol has. At the same time you get deaths through passive smoking but you don't get deaths through passive drinking!
For comparison Private Eye quoted the number of people killed by murder in the UK in one year as 839.
I don't smoke and never have done, but I do drink a bit of alcohol.
For comparison I have heard the number of people killed by overeating is about 30,000 a year but I can't remember the source for that one. That's what's likely to get me.
At the same time everyone has to die of something!
Never again will a story be told as though it is the only one:- Anon |

Actually, quieting one's addiction is very much hard to achieve, it may be through smoke, drug or alcohol addiction. I heard about the addiction counselling which give correct information about drug treatment. For more information visit http://lifetrackcounseling.com

Fleurette, I have been a smoker now for 20 years, just as long as I have been diagnosed schizoaffective; the thing is, is that no matter how harmful cigarettes are, they do not affect the beneficial action of the medication. Alcohol does. Alcohol can cancel off any effect of the meds and even cause a lethal effect. Cigarettes will not lead you to an overdose, or cancel off therapeutic effect. IMHO both are equally difficult to abstain from, once addicted to, but alcohol requires constant effort to quit, and every day one is a perpetual, new beginner 'not to have the first glass'. In one or two weeks, or perhaps a month, normally, one that abstains from smoking for that long is made free from it. Not so for alcoholics: sometimes after months of abstinence, one may get cravings and relapse. But there may be an element of subjectivity to it-one may shirk off alcohol like a cup of coffee, or another can rescind years of quitting smoking by lighting up the first butt. So it can be relative. Point is-you will not in the E.R. for a couple of smokes, but depending on intake of alcohol Molotov *****tails, combined with psychotropics you may well be-be very careful..... |
