This is from the blog of Dr. Rick Malter PhD:
As the psychological “Judge” (super ego, super critic) intensifies the stress response, magnesium will very likely continue to be lost from cell and tissue reserves. As the magnesium loss continues, this allows the adrenal glands to intensify the stress response. The activation of the adrenal glands will raise sodium levels that will very likely further reduce cellular magnesium reserves. As this process continues, the level of sodium (Na) will increase in relation to potassium (K) so that a high Na/K stress ratio results. The higher the Na/K ratio, the more intense the stress response will become. This results in further reducing magnesium levels in cells and tissues. This process involving magnesium reduction will further inflate the “Judge” psychologically, and this will maintain a high level of stress within the person. Some individuals will become so trapped in this serious vicious cycle involving stress that they will experience a health crisis, either physically and/or psychologically. An acute magnesium deficiency will be a significant part of this vicious cycle.
Psychologically, when the “Judge” is activated under stress, the body tension that is built up may prevent the retention of adequate magnesium from the diet and/or supplements. There may be a cellular loss of magnesium with intense stress. As stress intensifies, the person has a much greater need for magnesium.
When a person becomes aware of the “Judge” phenomenon and can “shrink” its size and psychological effect, a significant reduction in stress often occurs. As the intensity of stress is diminished, magnesium status often improves with greater retention of magnesium in the body. More magnesium tends to be absorbed and retained in cells and tissues. With the buildup of magnesium reserves, the “Judge” loses some of its psychological power over the person. This allows the person to manage stress much more effectively and with greater resilience. Health risks associated with the impact of stress and magnesium deficiency are greatly diminished.
That just about says it all, at least for me. From what I've read the most bioavailable magnesium is obtained through IV injection. After that comes magnesium chloride transdermally, which is a nothing so complicated as a footsoak. The idea is to break the vicious stress cycle which doesn't cure anything but makes everything much more manageable. What Malter describes is exactly what was happening to me. |

It is tempting to attribute the lifting of my recent hallucinations to MgCL2 but the fact is I was taking Seroquel right up to the night before this episode lifted as well as taking Mg. |

In a book I mention elsewhere "The UltraMind Solution" by Mark Hyman MD his subtitle is "Fixing Your Broken Brain By Healing Your Body First". It came out in Dec. of 2008.
In chapter 1.4 he describes magnesium as well as zinc, selenium and vitamin D as essential to brain function. He describes magnesium as the MAGnificent mineral. Yes, some of these guys have a tendency to exaggerate EVERY SUPPLEMENT as miracle workers. They are not, of coarse, but in this case he is close to correct. He probably gets his results by IV injection of Mg but he recommends foods like seaweeds, beans, and greens.
People with schizophrenia have a tendency to overreact to incoming stimuli. This is the inability to handle noise and stress. It has to be a simple fact that the brain sees this stimuli as an attack and threat. The normal reaction is to protect the organism (the body) by stiffening or contracting muscles, organs, BRAIN VENTRICLES and blood vessels. Unconsciously it is seen as a systemic attack.
According to Mark Hyman MD; "Think of magnesium as the relaxation mineral. ANYTHING THAT IS TIGHT, irritable, crampy or stiff - whether it is a body part OR EVEN A MOOD - is a sign of magnesium deficiency". (Caps are mine)
"This critical mineral is responsible for more than 300 enzyme reactions in the body and is found in all your tissues, but mainly in your BRAIN, BONES AND MUSCLES. It is necessary for your cells to make energy..."
Here are some of the more common conditions that result from a Mg deficiency from the book (among more than 3,500 others):
"Anxiety, autism, ADHD, headaches (migraines), chronic fatigue, irritability, muscle cramps or twitches, insomnia, sensitivity to loud noises, palpitations, angina, constipation, anal spasms, fibromyalgia, asthma, kidney stones, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, PMS, menstrual cramps, irritable bladder, irritable bowel syndrome, reflux, trouble swallowing..."
Stress decreases Mg levels. "one study in Kosovo found that those under chronic war stress lost large amounts of magnesium in their urine".
It could be said that people with serious diseases like schizophrenia are in the middle of a one person war which usually includes parts of the rest of the world.
Hyman goes on to say that "Magnesium levels are also decreased by excess alcohol, salt, coffee, sugar, phosphoric acid in colas, profuse sweating, chronic diarrhea, excessive menstruation, diuretics (water pills), antibiotics, other drugs, and some intestinal parasites." These are the Mg suckers that are everywhere in modern society.
If you go to your average doctor and ask for a blood test for Mg deficiency he will either laugh and talk you out of it OR he will gladly give it. Serum blood tests ALWAYS come out within normal limits. You really have to be in bad shape for it to be otherwise. The problem is in the cells and that is hard to measure.
If you buy Mg supplements or Calcium/ Magnesium supplements you've just wasted your money. (Some ppl are able to avoid diarrhea and actually benefit from Mg pills, liquid, powders but most do not).

In the original post I made on this thread I was actually trying to gage if anyone would actually try Transdermal Magnesium Chloride who was a regular on this site. I was curious if this stuff could make a any difference. The conclusion being, I guess, is that no one tried it or if they did it made no difference. The two replies I got elsewhere were not regulars & I have to wonder...
It's not surprising everything considered and that's the way it should be. BTW, revolutionhealth.com is a very decent site where, if you look hard enough, you can find individual favorable anecdotal comments on various kinds of Mg. There's no research on this type of magnesium b/c, it can't be patented & it can't be measured in the cells.
