I found couseelling helping, plus I found reading RD LAING interesting. Sometimes I think Gandalf was my false self, my non sexual self.
I kn ow His views were esoteric. and their not a substitute for neuroleptic really, but I feel there is a existenssial aspect to my illness as well as simple biochemistry and neurochemistry. I feel I have become a rebel and Albert Camus and Stanley Milgram have taught me to do it (amoung others).
By the way this my 1,000 post, I think |

Congratulations on your 1000th post!
RD Lang had some very good ideas and gave others some as well. I am particularly interested in the Thud experiment and it's fallout in the psychiatric community. I think in his later years Lang was too hard on psychiatry and what little I know about his ideas on family dynamics don't sit right with me. I think I have to read more.
on the subject of anti-psychiatry are either of you familiar with the Socialist Patients Collective (SPK)? I have a book of collected writings by the SPK and it's introduced by Sartre. The SPK were an East German therapy group which became millitant thanks to the work of their therapist who was experimenting with Marxist ideas about psychotherapy. I think they occupied their psych ward when the East German government threatened to close the hospital some of them became really hard core revolutionaries and joined the Red Army Faction when they got out of the hospital.
Born in the 80's, grew up in the 90's, lost my mind at the Millenium. |

Hi Chris, Hi David
Thank you for your responses!
I am more of a social liberal now than an actual socialist, I think Keynes had the recipe for the final fifth stage of society (or at any rate closer to it) I did like Neil kinnock and I think I would have voted for him in 1987, but I don't think I'd describe myself as an actual Marxist, and I have a little antipathy towards Satre sometimes, I felt he was a bit too sympathetic towards the USSR.
RD Laing rejected the label anti-psychiatry, saying he never disagreed that people sometimes needed help. I would disagree with him that in General 'schizophrenics' need neuroleptics, but they need to be understood as people as well.
I haven't read much of Thomas szasz but I've read enough to think he was at least partly wrong, And I've tried to read Goffman as well. I've heard David Cooper really was off his head. |
