Hi -- I am new to this forum. One of my nephew, who is 17 years old, who was good and healthy, normal school going kid, suddenly started exhibiting multiple personality symptoms. We are in the process of consulting with the psychiatrist.
Meanwhile, here is brief description of his behavior when his family had gone for a visit to a temple.
Any pointers towards what this could be and help in diagnosis would be great.
Here is the account of what happened.
We went to couple of temples. He was showing stiff resistance to enter the the temple and his behavior completely changed since we got down the bus nearby that temple. Inside the temple, while we were offering service, his face turned violent with innumerable expressions. After that we asked him to lie down for some time. As soon as he lied down, his eyes started rolling vigorously and hands started moving. He tried to strangle himself on numerous occasions during the course of that 3 hr episode. After three hours he suddenly got up and asked if we can leave and we left. We went to around 6 other temples. He didn't do anything wild there yet he was still not his own. He was silent and thinking and often telling tht he was tired and wanted to go back to the room. While coming back to the room, he suddenly shook up and started looking around in a puzzled manner. He asked " Why didn't we go to the temples? " He doesn't remember anything other than getting down at a bus stop to enter the first temple. I told him that he got unconscious there and so we took him in a wheel chair to all the temples. While having dinner ( the same place where we had lunch yet he couldn't remember it too), he suddenly started staring at some thing and sat still. I shook him up and he came back to senses with a sarcastic smile and a cold demeanour on his face. I asked him what happened. He replied "I feel tired because we went to so many temples..let us go back to hotel room ". He also said what he ate in that same hotel for lunch. We were all terribly shocked. After coming back to the room, he started sleeping though we asked him to try and control sleeping. Again.. eye ball rolling.. hand movement.. we cudn break him this time. It took quite a long time. He got up and started to think and told.. he had a dream ( during the morning in temple or now .. he was not sure ). He told us the bits and pieces of the dream. From what he said .. it looked like the family was performing some funeral service for him on June 6, 2009. He started feeling drowsy.. and just closed his eyes. I immediately shook him.. again he woke up puzzled. Now he remembers getting down at the bus stop for entering the first temple...and the short span in between getting up in the car and asking me what happened until half way through the dinner ( where again he was staring and got back to the person who went to all the temples ). Here i see three different characters. One who came to all the temples ( with the aggression and all ). One who told us the date of the funeral service. And the one who doesn't know anything abt the other two. This has been his problem for the past one month. I dont know why a specific character turns up only sometimes ( and that too very violent and self destructive at times and silent but very cold and lethargic at times ). The doctors saw some of these symptoms during the MRI scan of his brain and told that there may be a slight neuro problem and have started medicines. Feeling very terrible and helpless.

Hi there,
You are the first person I have heard of who has had something turn up during the MRI process. In some ways it is easier to accept for the person with the illness if there is something physically wrong with the brain instead of having a chemical imbalance and misfiring neurons. It sounds like the doctors are on top of the situation and it sounds like you have a caring and supportive family. With a nuerological foundation for the problem it might impact the label that is given to your nephew as well. This will make living with the condition easier. The best advice I can give you is to just keep doing what you are doing. Be there for your nephew. Try to give him some time to recover. Don't expect him to improve over night. Sometimes it can take up to 3 months for a medication to work. And sometimes you have to try a couple of medications to find the right one. Try to read up on the medication that your nephew has been prescribed. Read about the side effects. Visit our forum and see what our members have had to say about that particular med.
I wish I had more specific advice to give you but I havn't dealt with multiple personality syndrome myself. But that is the best I can think of for now.
Try to pop in every now and then to let us know the update of he is doing and how the family is coping as we are interested.
Thank you
