I have been suffering from paranoid schizophrenia for over 17-years, and have tried almost all of the typical antipsychotic medications with limited or little success. I have also tried 2 of the atypical agents - Seroquel and ziprasidone - with no success whatsoever. Because I live in Canada, I have been unable to try Abilify; there is simply too much red tape involved in obtaining it. Due to a bone-marrow condition that I have, I have been prohibited from being placed on clozapine/Clozaril. On 2 separate occasions, I was placed on a low dose of olanzapine, but was forced to discontinue when my weekly blood tests showed a precipitous drop in my neutrophil counts. Because I have battled testicular cancer within the last 4-years (both with surgery and chemotherapy), my doctor has put off trying me on risperidone/Risperdal, since it tends to raise prolactin levels. In light of my treatment resistance, however, the risperidone option is now being considered. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with risperidone/Risperdal in treating resistant schizophrenia? In addition, I am extremely curious as to whether or not anyone has experienced metabolic side effects (i.e., weight gain, increased glucose, increased cholesterol and triglycerides, ect.) I would really appreciate any input that anyone could offer regarding this query. |

I am not on this med but some of our other members have found it has helped. Hopefully they will make some posts here.
In terms of weight gain you put on weight apparently but not as badly as olanzapine.

If you don't get many responses I suggest that you cross post this into the general discussion thread as it gets more traffic. |

It would be helpful to us all here if you were able to tellus how you were currently doing OWLman.
I say that not ever having engaged with you, however I have noticed how you have touched the lives of others with your caring persona... It is time for us to address the balance, David

Thank you for your kind words, davidt.
Sorry to take so long to respond, but I just read your post.
I am still hanging in there. I have been having some physical challenges - including a kidney problem resulting from my previous chemotherapy regimen - that require constant treatment, as well as personal challenges. My schizophrenia, fortunately, has been kept under control with medication, and is stable.
Thank you for your concern. |

I got off my medication for a week broke my psychosis and now after a week I can focus better and don't have psychosis at all; because it's not normal to think everyone is talking about you, it is not normal to think cars are talking about you and it is not normal to think the television and radio are talking to you; so I don't anymore and when people piss me off rather than punching them in the face(males) and throwing or spilling my beverage on them(women) - I just walk off and cool off and if I need to leave the situation entirely; for example, I was going to go back to a sit down a Roomate invited me to and I just left because of the last comment a group of women said - I would have poured my drink right over there head but I decided to just walk off; the psychosis voices have gone away and I am schizophrenic but I always down play it public by rubbing my eyes; these episodes have been going on for years; I've had psychosis twice and it took me a year to break both;
So risperdol and staying sober are great;
My question is simple when do I start feeling less groggy and tired in the morning; I sleep 6 to 8 hours on them because I am going to work being this sick cause I am well rounded and smart; but still I am exhausted till 12;
Also I am not worried about weight gain or breast growth or all the side effects of risperdol because for the most part I would rather my mental sanity than anything else; I would; |

Experience with risperdol;
My auditory hallucinations have gone away after two weeks; completely vanished; I know people talk **** all day but I don't care; I just ignore them and the crazy **** they say under their breathe;
My seeing visual hallunications have gotten better because now I see them and don't get distracted again; my biggest concern has always been actually reacting to the shadows or getting really sick driving but god I am never getting off these medications again - I have seen one thing today at work, two things this week and didn't get distracted; I think it was getting sober, gaining my concentration back and staying on medication; it's getting so degenerative but I am learning not to give it power because if I wasn't on my medication I would get just as sick as I did at the furniture store I was at; I lost an hour or so because I was seeing stuff and didn't want to talk anybody because I didn't need to because it was taking control.
My doctor talks about me all the time when I go up there, but I like her and trust her because she just gives me my medicine fast; I wish I could go in that place and just be in and out in ten minutes so I can come back home watch tv, read a blog or work out but it's always a keep you busy everyone talk about me adventure which is sad, because I just want it to stop and just me be responsible and pay my bills like I have always been while making money;
But I was writing this because now I am starting to feel real normal - not because anyone talked to me or said some crazy **** or nice ****; no because I am seeing **** like I did before and I don't get distracted now; I am sick but I am going to be normal not because anyone said it and **** because I can work a high level functioning job and I did it for years like this;
But I am getting handshakes during the day. Is this normal?

I'm currently on resperidone. I quite like it. It causes increased apetite for food and weight gain :- but they all do that. (Neuroleptics, that is)It has also given me boobies a wee bit, but I think its worth it to stay sane.
