My husband has mental illness and is having difficulty dealing with the stigma attached to it and therefore is having difficulty seeking the help and subsequent treatment that is needed to ensure a better future for him and our children and myself. I need help getting him to see that it is ok to do what needs to be done for himself. It is very difficlult for him and I believe that it is schizophrenia or something very much like it that he has, however what form and if there are other illnesses that are conflicting with it I do not know. All I am sure of is that he hears voices, noise and music in his head and is having serious trouble. He needs words of advice from people like himself that have illnesses of the like and have found life better with treatment.
I see my husband that I love and have been with for 14 years slipping further and further away from me and I feel so helpless most of the time. That doesn't mean that I have given up on him though. Every day I fight to move him forward. Babysteps is what we are dealling with now and sometimes for every one forward we are taking three and four back. I am emotionally drained, financially destroyed and my children, 10 and 10 both girls are way out of wack and failing in school.
I have been in touch with the Schizophrenic society of ontario in our area and are involved a bit with them, and they meet every second tue of the month and I work. I am on the message board of the schizophrenic society of Canada. And more.......... We live in a northern part of ontario and the doctor shortage is not helping my husband's mental health at all. In fact it is making it much worse because he feels that no one cares, and his self esteem falls even lower.
Anyone with advice and words of encouragement for either of us please let me know and check out the story I have on the Schizophrenic Society of Canada discussion board it is more of his story and mine and what we are all going through, including its effects on our children, it is all on there.
thankyou so much faithfullf, lora |

I am having a similar problem with my wife.
She has, in the past, been on various medications for limited periods of time. But she has refused any treatment at all within the last 3 months or so.
There is a book entitled, "I'm Not Sick, I Don't Help" by Xavier Amador, but I didn't find it helpful at all.

Hi Lori, the only way that your husband will get better is if he takes his medication. I know that you know that. Now, we have to find a way to get your husband to know that. He may have to hit rock bottom before he realizes how serious this illness is. I hope you won't ever have to use tough love on him, but he is so sick...it's such a hard situation. Don't hesitate to try anything, within reason of course, to help him get better. Any thoughts anyone? Love, Cindy |
