my worst psychiatrist would ask me these questions which were difficult for me to answer. when i couldn't answer his questions, he said in front of the nurse, "u call urself an university student, and u can't answer these questions?"
i dreaded to see him each time. after every appointment i would cry, sometimes even during the appointment.
i didn't like him at all but don't know if his attitude was unprofessional.

In the army, I saw a Psychiatrist who would fiercly scold me.
He said I was manipulating him to get it easy in the army.
He is most famous for medically upgrading soldiers for combat vocations when they go to him to downgrade to clerical vocations.
He was the worst Psychiatrist I ever saw.
Thank goodness I am out of the army now and not seeing him. |

The very first psychiatrist that I saw asked me about my family history. I told him what I thought was relevant and after about 1/2 hour, he told me it was all my parents' fault. I must admit, I did feel a sense of relief when he said that because then I finally thought that I was right. Then he told me I had a dysfunctional family and that's is why I was having so many problems. He said that my mother treated my brother with more love and understanding than how she treated me. He also said that I was given responsibilities that were far beyond my years. Apparently, I didn't get a chance to just "be a kid and have fun with my peers." He didn't mention at all that a lot of Chinese families do treat boys and girls differently, and that wasn't dysfunctional at all. He didn't at once feel that it was because of mental illness that I isolated myself from all my peers. I immediately went home and literally scolded my parents - my mom started crying and my dad was angry at me for falsely accusing them both for things that they didn't do. My parents' immediately told me to stop seeing this psychiatrist and that they'd help us find another one. I was so out of it that I just agreed with them. The next 2 were just as bad. One of them even brought my parents' in the appointment and got mad at them and saying that they were responsible for all of this madness. They couldn't believe it! They didn't even know what they did! They were obviously very confused and hurt. Then, finally, we found my current pdoc. He was wonderful right from the start and although I was extremely delusional at the time, I could tell that he cared very much for me and my family. When my pdoc told my parents that I have schizophrenia, my parents were shocked, but extremely relieved. Also, the good pdoc told them that it is treatable...to make a long story short (too late!), it's very important that you find a good psychiatrist. Definitely, not all of them are good. I agree jayster! You are right all the way there! Filletofish, sounds awful, some just do not understand sadly. ChunkyBeefsoup sounds like a pretty lousey Psychiatrist.
I had one once I never really felt was the best. He would sit very close to me and talk in a really high pitched and soft voice. Would keep moving around and asking me "What do you have in your hands?" "What are you doing with your hands?" "let me see your hands!" Said I could not see any other doctor I had to only let him help me and got very rude and had to have things his way. he sure did cared and was such a sweetheart that way, had lots of ways to help me and could understand me.
Another was a little odd the first psychiatrist i ever saw when i first saw him Itried to leave the room and was told "No you stay here!" and every time I tried to get out of my seat I was told that again till he finally slid closer to the door so I could not escape. he said "I'm going to take some notes while we talk." Then I was asked a few simple questions of stuff that was already written down and then I slid my hand across the window sil that made a sqeaaaaaaak sound. He looked up every so often when the window sil sqeaked but then puearched glasses on the tip of his nose and wrote. Finally told me I could go back to the waiting room and I got Riperdal. The shrink did not even tell me why or anything! Then months later I looked around the room and took a look at some of the toys and stuff he had in the room and was asked questions about them and "it sure is windy outside Is'ent it." when I looked out the window." I was constently asked "What is the biggest problem you have now?" I got Seroquel and again told nothing next visit I was told I had to stick with it. He was okay but pretty bad. had no idea what he was doing, was so strict and cold hearted, I never talked to him anyway.
One thing that would be nice is if they did not judge people so much and actually let them know what is going on!  |

officially hi. because i've never directly corresponded with u before. i agree with u wholeheartedly, people need to know what is their diagnosis and why they r on each of the drugs that they r prescribed. if patients don't believe that they have the right diagnosis, they r far less likely to keep taking the medications. don't u agree? how is ur current psychiatrist, greek116?

I should have added I am stuck now with NO PSYCHIATRIST, just you folks and my knowledge, the computer, God and everyone else. 
Fleurette, glad we agree, I am sure several others would also agree. You have a very good point added to your post!

hi greek116,
with no psychiatrist, how do u get ur medications? thru a general practioner? is there something u could do about that? btw, do u have any diagnosis already?
i think this site is great but if u do have a mental illness no one can replace the info that u could get from a health care professional. esp. for mental health. if it was just a cold or flu who cares, but i really wish u could see someone if u need that help.

| Hi Greek. I completely agree with Fleurette. If you do have an illness, you need to be treated correctly. I know that it's sometimes hard to admit to having a mental illness, but the medicines are so incredibly good now. Aside from some lack of concentration and memory and the occasional delusion, I'm symptom free. These that I mentioned are very minor problems for me now. It's taken a while, but if you stick to treatment, you'll do fine. Sorry to sound like your mother, but I'm want to tell you what has worked for me over the years. After treatment, I was able to go back to university and finished with a degree in Psychology. I wouldn't have been able to do that were it not for the medications. Now, I have a husband, 2 wonderful cats, and my life back. Please continue to let us know how you're doing, Greek. Love, Cindy |

Fleurette ~ I have not had a psychiatrist since June 2006!
Lost the psychologist in Augest Darn Psychologist then took her guessing game to things like Autism which got me into a support class i do not need and people thinking i have Autism when i do NOT!!! !!!
I agree with you and thanks, that message was touching! :)
My GP would most likely not help, they do not know much about that.
They did not tell me much about what was going on either! Schizo - Typal before that and Psychiatrist gave me Seroquel (I still have some Seroquel left) it is a shame you were close and doing fine and have so much great then, it is all gone and they think you have something you don't!

ChunkyBeefSoup ~ I did not know much about all this shrink stuff months ago, I recently began reading and learning and all that. Iwould love to be able to feel better some and have a great medicine , I know treatment is so good but because of my age I do not have that choice. My parents stopped taking me and I am put in a SE class for people with ASD - after the nasty careless Psychologist played her little guessing game! WHICH I DO NOT HAVE a ASD! I encountered a crappy psychiatrist when I was in the hospital. She always rushed the appointments. She always made me feel like I was wasting her time. I mean, I can't possibly come up with answers to difficult questions in just a few seconds. When people are ill, it can take longer for them to respond as their thinking is slowed down.
Secondly, she put words into my mouth. She disagreed with a diagnosis that a previous doctor had given me. But the thing was, she only saw me for maybe five minutes! You can't possibly diagnose some one with or without a mental illness in barely no time! |

Sorry to hear about your rushed psychiatrist L.Rose. There are good and bad in all professions And J, Dr Phil is not a psychiatrist, he is a behavioral psychologist. But I agree with you, I'd love to deck him if he ever talked to me like he does to people .

| I am going to see a psychiatrist in two weeks on May 27. I don't know if I will like him. I haven't seen one in 3 1/2 years. I have had problems but the problems that got me put in the mental hospital is starting to come back. I told my gp and he told the ER doctor. Why can't they kept it private. I want my privacy. |
