I have had this ilnness for more than nine years now and it shocks me how ignorant even doctors are about early warning signs.Of the many people I have met with this diagnosis, some had both parents in the medical field..albeit not psychiatry and yet they took their time before getting psychiatric help for their children. If depression is indeed one of the most common disabling illnesses as they say it is, this should change. |

My family doctor doesn't know much about mental illnesses. I think that he could potentially hurt his clients more than help them. He once told my mother-in-law that I could still have children. My psychiatrist says that I have to stop my meds for the first three months of pregnancy. I know that that is not possible. I cannot function one day without my meds, let alone three months! I was very mad at my family doc. I couldn't believe that he told her that I could still have children! He gave her false hope - my husband's side of the family really wants us to have children. I want children also, but I'm not willing to jeopardize my health or the health of my child, were I to go through with the pregancy. My friend gouged out one of her eyes with her finger when she was pregnant and wasn't on medication. Cindy |

Also, there was a client of my pdoc's and I knew him quite well. He was attractive and very bright with a wonderful wife and baby girl. Both of his parents had PhD's and were both psychologists. They told him from day one that he should never take any medication, even though he has schizophrenia. They also did not believe that he had schizophrenia and had many "talks" with my pdoc. They constantly told their son that he just had a bad reaction from the illicit drugs and that was what was causing him so many problems. Now, nobody knows where he is. Very sad. Take care, Cindy |

Yes, when I first went to the GP for help they thought I had ADD/ADHD, after medication found out of course I do not! Then said well if it is not depression or Anxiety she is fine. Really their knowledge is not so great when it comes to mind stuff. But they can almost always predict Step Throat, Flu, Scarlet fever, Stomach Virus, broken bones, allergies to almost anything else. Everyone has their place for a reason!

when i told my family doctor that i was drooling excessively, guess what he said? "i do that too, it's normal" i was in disbelief to compare a 30 year olds drooling to a healthy 60 year old, without any consideration of the medications i was on. another patient of my pdocs told me that it is a side effect of the medication. he (the GP) made me feel so stupid. i think he is the one who is stupid.

That's hilarious (well, maybe not) Fleurette. I can't believe he compared you to him! He's 60 years old, for crying out loud! Practically every person his age drools. What an idiot. Goes to show you that just because you have a lot of education doesn't make you any less of a fool. Love, Cindy |
