My psychiatrist was concerned when I went in a couple days ago for my appointment. First, I scribbled on the mood chart because I dislike filling out an arbitrary chart that undermines the complexity of my mental and emotional health. So I drew a smiley face on it and she said it was weird behavior to scribble and draw a smiley face on this stupid chart I had to fill out every appointment.
Then I ripped it up after she zerox'd it. She recommended that I go to a mental hospital because I was feeling suicidal a week ago, and I was given anti-seizure medications that I took and may have taken too many to make myself feel better. But my father said I would be ok and I ended up not going. I feel relieved. But I don't know what hospitals are like, and I wonder if it would have helped. I haven't been to one since I was a teenager it was always horrible for me. |

Hi Depends on which hospital. Like going to a restaurant you just dont know what you are going to encounter.
I have been hospitalized 10 times in the ladt 6 or 7 years....but even as though I am on a basic fixed income I pay $50 a week to keep up my health insurance so I can be cared for....and it is a healing place....and after so many hospitalizations the staff are friends and have seen me psychotic...been there when mum died...been there when I became a grandmother and been there when my 30 year partnership collapsed.I have been invited for Christmas lunch....it is that much of a nurturing environment.
I have also been in the free clinic and I feared for my life....but bear in mind I was psychotic and paranoid.
Listen to your doctor and be honest with her....you have your Dad as back up...love him to bits for being there forbyou....it is hard on them.
Good Luck

Hi beautiful mind,
I tend to find when I'm very ill psychiatric hospital is helpful more often than not. I did find some of the psychiatrist in the early years made some misunderstandings of me, but they were mostly juniour doctors and when I got to see consultants with more experience, they understood me better. I found typing an account of my illness helpful for their undertstanding.
Blessed are the peacemakers:- Jesus Christ

I have been in two hospitals myself and the first experience was the best, I went into a private hospital that was small, homey and only held 12 patients at a time. That was one of the only times I could have gotten better but left too soon. The second time was the exact opposite. I went to a large hospital that could hold up to 40 patients at a time, it was more like going to a school and was the worst experience of my life and I left there as quick as possible and never looked back. So from my experience it all depends on what hospital you go to but unlike two years ago when I went into my first hospital you cant choose which hospital you go in and it's the luck of the draw. So make sure that it is only the last resort. |

Hi Beautiful Mind,
How are you currently? As for me I have only been to the hospital once for a suicide attempt. They gave me de-activating charcoal to drink. This was many years ago so I don't know if they still have the same procedure. It helped me back then but I agree with the 4 previous replies.
I hope you are well and no longer suffering from thinking about suicide. |
