I would say I had 4 of the "basic symptoms of schizophrenia- early changes in thinking." For me they emerged after the onset of the illness and persisted for a few years. I had: thought blockages, disturbance of expressive speech, disturbance of abstract thinking, and captivation of attention. Before the acute breakdown I remember having depression and continuous worry. Also I had what I would consider vocational and social poor functioning. With my acute breakdown it was as if I could no longer go forward in life. I became mildly to moderately delusional with the first break which lasted about 10 days. But it was the beginning of the disease that has lasted ever since. I have had a variety of symptoms over the years. I guess the most prominent "basic symptoms" as you describe them were feeling lost and having less contact with people and loss of most topics of conversation. There was always a major dysphoric feeling.

Fleurette, I had problems with analogies and metaphors too. The asked me what does it mean, "A rolling stone gathers no moss." Or "People in glass houses should not throw stones." There are many such statements. Basically I gave long answers that were considered too concrete. The statements should get a simple response reflecting basic understanding. I struggled to explain ideas that were a little bit complicated.
