Hi

I regularly take clozapine and was wondering

if anyone suffers from Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS)?

It states online that it is quite common with 1 in 4 suffering from
it.

I personally don't believe this as I find IBS so debilitating that

I crawl to sleep on my bed to get rid of the stomach pains

There is no cure and the meds prescribed only work for so long.

The symptoms are one of painful cramps in the intestine/stomach and

either constipation or diarrhoea.

I have researched whether clozapine may cause this but there is very

little literature on it.

Those that suffer from it is there any remedies that work?

Regards

Hi synapse,

I am not diagnosed with IBS but I have severe constipation. I see a gastro doctor for it. I had a colonoscopy last year and getting another in June.

My GP has me taking senna laxative and colace stool softner everyday and this seems to help.

Antipsychotics do cause constipation due to the anticholergenic effects.

I take it by your post that you might be getting both diahrhea and constipation?

Hi Chelle

In the UK if all other diagnoses fail then you get lumped with

the diagnosis of IBS. The downside to this is there is no cure

and it is life-long. The medics then take the foot off the pedal and

send you home and you are told to live with it.

I only get constipation not diarrhoea. I have been prescribed Laxido

for this.

Hi synapse the constipation is from our meds the antipsychotic. The best we can do is take a laxative because we have to take our meds.

At least that's what my Psche doc told me and my gastro doc.

Have you had a colonoscopy and a complete work up with a gastroenterologist?

Unfortunately, in the UK the funds aren't there for so many

hospital referrals. My GP has only referred me for an ultrasound scan.

She said if everything came back normal only then will

she refer me for a camera down my throat - I don't know

the technical term for this procedure.

Take care.

The camera down your throat is an endoscopy but that checks your stomach. You would need a colonoscopy for constipation. That would be a camera up your rear.

It's not all that bad as they give you meds and you don't even know they are doing it. So a change in bowel habits requires the colonoscopy do they can check for colon cancers and polyps.

I had it last year and thankfully because they found polyps that they said could have turned cancerous and removed them.

Thanks for the information.

I had an ultrasound done of the main organs which came back negative,
all ok.

The doctor was a trainee and suggested it could be inflammatory bowl

disease and not syndrome.

That would make sense as if it was IBS (which is more common and

treated with over the counter products sometimes) the queues to the

emergency department would be over flowing.

Did my research - came back as either crohn's disease or UC.

I would still suggest a gateroenterologist doctor to do the diagnosing as that is thier specialty.

I hope you get things figured out so that you can get treatment and be comfortable.

Spoke to my GP yesterday.

She stated that IBS and irritable bowel disease are one and the same

disease.

I am a bit disappointed that she could not differentiate between the

two even though google also suggest there is a difference.

IBD can be Crohn's disease or UC (ulcerative colitis).

On the plus side she has referred me to a consultant but she said

don't hold your breath as in her opinion it is still IBS.

Glad you got the referral to the consultant. Is it a gastro doctor? I still think the specialist may find otherwise. It could very well be just your medication.

If it's the medication causing your constipation then you will just have to stay on laxatives like I do.

They think my constipation is my medication.

Getting a colonoscopy will rule out more serious things

Good news I got the referral, the bad news when I tried to book an

online appointment it says there are no free slots and have to wait

10 working days for a reply. The NHS in the UK is in a bad shape.

I'm sorry to hear that you have to wait synapse. It sounds like you got the ball rolling. Hoping you get that reply quickly.

Yes I always think of socialized medicine being better than what we have here in the USA but I guess it's not.

I hear others from other countries telling me they get put on waiting lists.

I guess I should thank the good lord for our medical system over here.

I hope you get the appointment quickly

Keep us posted

I just had a bad bout of constipation again myself here the past few days. Even my laxative was not working.

I had to go to the ER and they gave me enema and gave me the drink that clears your bowels out for colonoscopy. I just finished that today but still feel like somethings is left in there.

I have a gastro appt set for Thursday morning.

This constipation is no fun

Hi

Have you lost weight as a result of your bowel problems?

I have actually put on weight since having IBS as I can only

keep down junk food like chocolates for e.g.

I don't have the classic problems such as diarrhoea but do have

constipation for which I use Laxido.

Yes I lost weight with my constipation.

I was told that chocolate can contribute to constipation.

I was told to eat high fiber foods. It helps.

Google high fiber foods and you will get a list of foods that you can eat for this.

My doctor was very serious when he said you need to eat high fiber for this and to drink a glass of water after each meal. Also to drink more water throughout the day.

Junk food and sugary food will seriously make it worse.

When mine was acting up bad the only thing I could hold down was whole grain oatmeal and I put a tablespoon of peanut butter and blueberries in it.

Try to eat lots of fruits and vegetables but stay away from bananas because those will constipate you.

I was told by a doctor, a relative of mine, to try linseeds.

Boiling them in hot water then sieving the seeds to give a oily-type

liquid to drink.

It is early days but here is me hoping.

Hi Synapse,

Yes I have heard that linseed (flaxseed) can help.

Right now I have had to resort to taking laxatives. I had to add another one to my regimine.

I take senna vegetable laxative 2 pills before I go to bed along with 1 stool softner pill called colace. This takes 6-12 hours before a bowel movement will begin. By the time I wake up and have coffee it gets things moving however, even after I go a few hours later I'm constipated again and can only let out a small pebble.

So now I added the other laxative miralax I take that about 4 hours after I wake up.

I have also added prunes to the regimine . Prunes can work wonders for constipation but you only need to eat 2-4 a day.

My dictor also suggested a probiotic. I picked one up from the pharmacy. It contains lactobacillus and acidophilus.

This regimine is for now working.

I found out I also have a rectocele which is a female prolapse that is most likely complicating my constipation problem.

I hope you have gotten some relic from the linseed.
