Hi I am trying to figure out what to do about an old friend, I and others in our group of friends (including his family) are really worried about. I am not sure if he is Schizophrenic but I am beginning to suspect he is. I would greatly appreciate any opinions or input on how to deal with this. I am afraid that if something is not done soon, our friend will end up in serious trouble.
The facts
My friend is male, just over 50, I have known him for 25 years, and he has always had an obsessive nature. Everything he does is to the limit, his interests are thought about, and analyzed 24/7 in every conceivable way and twist. He has always had issues of stalking his girlfriends (in the sense of watching with no violent intent)
He moves from one woman to another, with similar patterns. This got him in trouble with his work, which turned into legal problems, which he now obsesses over 24/7.
He denies obsessing, but can talk of nothing else, and when you try to contradict or challenge him, he says "You don't understand" and hangs up or refuses to discuss it, because you aren't supporting him.
Up to this point I had assumed he may have had OCD, but he seems to be more paranoid each month, he seems to think that people are conspiring against him in ways that are unrealistic. (He was actually conspired against by a group of co-workers in the past, so this gives him credence) He can’t see what is plain to others; instead he makes up wild other possible reasons to explain the obvious.
My friends and I have talked in depth, but don't know how to approach him without totally alienating him, and cutting us out of his life (making it worse)
How do you convince someone they need help, when they won't admit to the problem?
Thanks for any advice Concerned1 |

This may be sz but it could also be something else which has gone untreated and has gotten out of control. What i mean is, paranoia can show up in a number of disorders for a number of reasons.
Do you know if he is in any kind of treatment for anything?

He has been seeing a Psychologist for a few years, to deal with all the crap he has been through (Accusations against him, and stress) This Dr was also his expert witness, contradicting the psychologist in a hearing against him. (Can't get into details sorry) His Psych from what he tells us, is encouraging his behaviour. We don't know what the truth is.
