I am a strong advocate of risperdal. I had unpleasant experiences with abilify and geodon. These last two actually worsened my symptoms, but then again they were taken in addition with seroquel. Risperdal works effectively well with seroquel, starting on a (2mg) dosage of risperdal and 400(mgs) seroquel. I slowly increased seroquel to 800, and, progressively, the risperdal to 3, then 4 1-2, then 6. I stabilized incredibly, and my symptoms are nearly gone. The risperdal-seroquel hybrid helps with sleep, and the added seroquel also helps with the depression caused by risperdal. Risperdal is a gradual effect medication, and you should be patient with its effect. It takes some six months on a low dosage to get used to, and you should increase, (if necessary), only after then. Risperdal worked better than zyprexa for anxiety, and it also functions as a mood stabilizer. Risperdal also works remarkeably well with depakote. I have a 'triad' of depakote-risperdal-seroquel - a bit unusual - but effective. Usually the higher dosages of risperdal work great for day-to-day functioning and getting things done. Risperdal is a great stabilizer and has a continuous 'hang-in-there' effect. Also great for cutting down, as much as is allowed - the voices and the paranoia. I know of more severe cases of schizo. that worked effectively well with risperdal (3 cases, 6mgs each). As for the trembling and dyskenisea I have had none. |

I find Risperdal use terrifying and intimidating. It is ideal for bringing schizophrenics to their knees without them realising it until it is too late, and the indication is irreversible. Ideal from the manufacturer's point of view. Generally most anti-psychotics have a lot in common and I will agree that Risp is accompanied by very few physical side-effects which removes the "physical torture" aspect of its administration. However I have found the one side-effect which beats all: anxiety and a dry mouth as a function of anxiety and fear. This for me is amplified beyond reason. In Britain anxiolytics are rarely prescribed. I am sure the psychiatrists find it very amusing to see schizophrenia, be replaced by co-operativeness beyond that of the average unmedicated person. I no longer can distinguish between symptoms of my illness and those produced by the medication. Which is a catastrophic admission of defeat. Schizophrenics are wiped out by the power of the new drugs. You might as well say that you are suffering from Aspergers syndrome which is what life becomes like on Risp. And you wouldn't say boo to a goose. I reckon Risp is so effective that most of your person is erased and you are living on the surface of a shell. I am 60 and I have taken medication for 40 years. With anti-parkinsonian, Stelazine was the perfect stabilisation tranquiliser. That was the best time of my life. Just slightly antidepressant. Not like Risp which has to be balanced by 100 mg of Sertraline (antidepressant) to keep me from attempting suicide. We (everybody) need some "illusions" to live a normal life. The sort of illusion is for example: "that we are important", "that we are safe and protected", "that we are equal to most", and others. They sound remarkably like "human rights". Strictly speaking human rights are an illusion, in my opinion, but one which is necessary for a happy and productive, peaceful life within a society. Risp takes away these illusions together with any delusions that schizophrenia causes, and leaves you mentally cowering like a frightened dog. Living a fractional life wherein time flashes by, without being memorable, and you live in a magnified oral universe caused by looming tardive dyskinesia.

Wow! That was an amazing post and I couldn't agree more.
If the psych's could show that an induced coma reduces psychotic behaviour, it would be the next AP.

Risperdal has been a miracle drug for me , it not only stopped the voices and paranoia , it also helps with the negative symptoms of aspergers syndrome , the panic attacks, and stimming. I guess it's like any other med , it works well for some people and not for others .
there is a fine line between genius and insanity , if you can learn to walk the line , you can rule the world .unfortunately i keep falling into the insanity side |
