My 22y/o son has been battling schizophrenic symptoms for several years. We've researched through the internet and he has most of the symptoms. He wants help and I desperately want him to get help, but we have no insurance. He has applied for Medicaid several times and has been denied. We have gone to the hospital emergency rooms, knowing that they have to treat him with or without payment, and they Baker Act him and keep him for 72 hours. We've done that 3 times and he has received absoluteley no medication or treatment. They basically house him for 3 days and send him home with a list of places to seek treatment. Back to the problem of no insurance, we don't have the funds for Doctors and medications. There is a free clinic in our county, but they don't offer mental health services. I would appreciate any information or ideas about how to get help for him. Thanks! |

A friend of mine found me some health insurance on the cheap. You or he should buy him his own plan. It should be cheap-ish since he is a 22 year old male. If he's single even better. He should be able to score a pretty low rate. I can't remember what the search was, but make sure to include mental health in the search like my friend did. It was a good situation where the companies were trying to me their lowest bids. Let me see if I can find out what that specific search was. |

hey BryansMom, that's an awful situation to be in, it's terrible what passes for "health care" in the US. My suggestion to you, if this doesn't work would be to move to Canada, we have great health care and your son would het the kind of help that he needs, plus no Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh! Also everything is a little cheaper because our currency is worth less than yours.

British Columbia is nice this time of year, but Southern Ontario has Autumns like NY State.

Canada may have free health care, but just try finding a new psychiatrist, and if you have a mental illness, like sz., just try finding a family doc. No one wants to take you on - they cherry pick patients, only want the easy ones. And the only psychiatrists that are taking new patients on are not very good (my experience anyway). Fortunately, I was hospitalized and got a new psychiatrist, but I don't trust her and don't feel that she has made any effort to establish trust. She's young and nice, but I just can't seem to open up to her, just make small talk, and see her just enough to get my meds. Like someone else said, however, keep fighting for socialized medicine in the U.S.! Here, and everywhere, we have to fight for less stigma attached to mental illnesses - and docs are some of the most discriminating against the mentally ill.
