Some guy goes to his doctor because he's got liver problems and is told that if he doesn't quit drinking he'll die but the guy keeps on drinking and untimately dies or someone's told if they don't quit smoking they'll die and they keep on smoking until their last day, someone's got cholesterol problems, diabetes or whatever and they know they shouldn't eat this or that but they do anyway and end up having a heart attack, stroke or losing a leg. It's very common for people to not take their doctor's advice-not just schizophrenic folk-funny thing is though they don't call a problem drinker or a 450lb bigmac addict "non-compliant" like they do someone with a chemical imbalance in their brain-you never hear about a dentist injecting anyone with anything other than novacane because they don't clean their teeth like they should. Not saying it's a good or bad thing but I guess certain things are something a person brought on themself and something like schizophrenia is something that a person didn't bring on themselves and they have to accept that for the rest of their lives they have to take sedating medications and whatever to keep a hold of their sanity, it's not an easy thing to do-a lot of times it just stabilizes you it doesn't cure you-it's not like taking amoxicillin for an infection and it doesn't make you a more "functional person"-not in the ideal way-I mean pills only do so much-if you need them take them I do but the rest is up to you-that's what they say-a shrink's job is to give you pills and the rest is up to you. So, from having been on a list of different medications, having enough councilling therapy to last me for the rest of my life and having been in the hospital 10x or so and meeting a bunch of different kind of people with different mental disorders I think I understand why people refuse treatment-bureaucratic thinkers maybe don't but I think I do.

Hi Mike

Yes, I can relate to what you are saying.

My pdoc asks me how I am......gives me some suggestions like a life coach and refills my meds.

His theory is dealing with today......not reliving yesterdays.

It works for me.

well actually i have to disagree that its your choice since i was sixteen every time i refused meds i was injected with some type of anti psychotics the last time i went i was eighteen and the doctor told me he would get a lawyer to make me take meds by injection for my psychosis. its not that I'm against taking meds but i am against being locked inside so i do not reward them by complying. but it can be forced upon you. the lawyer agreed with my psychiatrist my advocate was stupid and i don't think she cared that much.they can control you.
