According to a booklet given to me ECT is used to treat: depressed person who is not responding to other treatments like oral medications. or a depressed elderly who cannot take medication due to risk of side effects or a person who is delusional or hallucinating who is not responding to medication or a person with mania who is not responsive to other treatments.
Have any of you ever had ECT ever? and what was it like?
Not my personal experience but in my 12 hospitalizations at this hospital I have met many ladies who undergo ECT. They do it Monday Wednesday and Fridays. People come in as day patients also. All I can say is I am amazed how good these ladies think it is. I was horrified 8 years ago when I discovered they were doing shock treatment...I thought it was a trick to zap my brain so I would stop causing trouble...lol...pdoc said do you think this is a trick and I yelled YES...he cracked up laughing...no you are not a candidate for ECT. He does however administer it and out if at least 20 patients there is only one who is sad about it. So I am truly amazed that these patients are so convinced of it making them well. Amazing.
I think it is not longer recommended now a days for sz unless all medications have not worked and they are very at risk for harming themselves. Maybe in desperate times they will try it on depressed people.
